Does HydraFacial Remove Dark Spots?

We all do our best to take care of our skin and our bodies. We drink plenty of water and make sure our faces are clean and moisturized every day. That’s not always enough. If you’re looking in the mirror thinking your face and skin look dull, dry and tired, or you’re noticing new dark spots, it’s time for a visit to Beauty 2.0 Aesthetics in Port Moody, BC. There, you can discover the many benefits of receiving a HydraFacial.

What Is a HydraFacial?

This is not your typical spa facial—it’s much more than that. Each HydraFacial is designed to reveal more vibrant, glowing and dewy skin that keeps improving after the treatment is done. This is a four-step treatment designed to target and remove dead skin cells, debris and other pollutants that prevent moisture and nourishment from penetrating our complexion. The four steps are:

  1. Cleansing and exfoliation
  2. Acid peel
  3. Extractions
  4. Serum infusion

This may seem typical, but the technology makes it anything but. The first step is done by your skincare specialist who manually exfoliates your face, clearing it of dead skin cells and opening your clogged pores. The next step is to apply a gentle chemical peel to your face that will help slough off your top layer of dulling skin cells. This is milder than a regular chemical peel and will not cause reddening or peeling.

The next two steps are where the real magic happens. Once your skin is clean and exfoliated and the top barrier of dead skin cells and debris removed, innovative technology is used to deeply clean and extract deep down pollutants, oils and dirt from your pores. That same technology reversed will infuse your skin with hydration. These two steps are called vortex extraction and vortex fusion.

Vortex Extraction

If you’ve ever had a regular spa facial, you know your skincare specialist will sometimes do manual extractions as they’re looking over your skin with a magnifying glass. This works to eliminate the clogged pores you can see but doesn’t do a deep cleansing and extraction of each pore.

With vortex technology, a nozzle is gently moved along your face. This nozzle circulates a liquid that acts like a vacuum when applied to your skin. This powerful vacuum removes blemishes like whiteheads, blackheads and other pore-clogging debris. This extraction is painless and instantaneous.

If you’re interested, your esthetician will show you everything that was extracted from your face. Clients are amazed their pores held so much debris and dirt. Even the cleanest of faces will have lingering pollutants that clog pores. Now that your pores are free of anything clogging them, they can breathe and will be better able to absorb quality products.

Vortex Fusion

In this final and most important step, a vortex fusion tool is used to infuse the newly cleansed pores with nourishment. You and your esthetician will decide which serum is right for you and will address your specific concerns. Serums can help address pigmentation issues, dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles, hydration and more.

The tool gently infuses your pores with your chosen serum to increase the overall health of your skin. The hydration your skin couldn’t absorb before the HydraFacial is now deeply soaked up by your glowing complexion.

Results

Because you walk into the office with layers of dead and dull skin cells, dirt and debris in your pores, results are immediate. The layers that were preventing moisture from really soaking in will be removed, so you walk out of the office with brighter, more vibrant and younger-looking skin.

You’ll see immediate results, but those results will also improve over the days following your treatment. When skin cells are sloughed away in your session, it triggers your body’s natural healing response, which is to produce more collagen. Collagen is the protein responsible for the plump and supple look of youthful skin. As your body regenerates new cells to replace the exfoliated ones, they will be healthier and have more stability.

Cells regenerate about every 28 days, so it’s a good idea to talk to your esthetician about a schedule of maintenance facials. Like most treatments, the more regularly you get them, the better and more seamless your results will be. If you don’t let the barrier of dead skin cells completely form, your skin will be able to constantly absorb hydration and maintain a glowing appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Because this is a non-invasive treatment with no preparation or downtime, anybody who would like a beauty boost is a good candidate. There are no needles and no discomfort, so even the most sensitive of skin can benefit comfortably from this treatment. When you’re speaking with your skincare specialist, talk to them about your areas of concern and the results you’re hoping for.

HydraFacials are a great way to brighten your complexion and improve the overall health of your skin. These facials can address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Tone and texture
  • Vibrancy
  • Elasticity and firmness
  • Oily skin
  • Congested skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dark spots and uneven pigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Dry skin

It’s never too early or too late to enjoy the benefits of this treatment. Any skin tone or type can safely enjoy the results of a newly revealed and healthy complexion.

Complementary Treatments

You may have other concerns about your appearance. Maybe the aging process is leaving you feeling self-conscious and you want to recapture some youthfulness you’ve been missing. Your skincare specialist may recommend other treatments to provide you the results you’re looking for.

Dermaplaning

This is becoming a more popular choice for clients who want a quick complexion pick me up and immediate, ultra-soft and smooth skin. Your skincare specialist will use a custom dermaplaning blade to scrape off the top layer of dead skin cells, debris and peach fuzz. When all those tiny hairs are removed, the result is a smooth and silky soft surface of the skin.

Clients are amazed at how well their skin soaks in their beauty products after this treatment. Makeup goes on and comes off much more evenly and easily. Because the top layer of skin is full of dead cells and dulling debris, removing them will make your whole appearance brighter and clearer.

This can be a stand-alone treatment but is most effective when used with a chemical peel. The dermaplaning preps the skin to better accept the chemical peel, making the peel more effective and the results of both more dramatic.

Chemical Peels

Peels are very versatile and customizable. They are designed to maximize your skin’s regeneration process and provide total skin rejuvenation. Based on your individual needs, your skincare specialist will determine which level of peel is right for you. Some peels are milder than others. If you have concerns that require a deeper level of repair, your esthetician can formulate a stronger peel for you.

Once the peel is applied to your face, it goes to work lifting the top layer or layers of dead skin cells away. After about a week, new skin cells are regenerated to replace those dulling cells and a healthier, more vibrant complexion is revealed. Chemical peels are an excellent option for addressing:

  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Sun damage

After a peel, your skin is better able to absorb facial products, so it’s important to only use high quality, nourishing ingredients Your esthetician’s office may have specialized skincare lines and can tailor a skincare routine to meet your specific needs.

Microneedling

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is an effective skin resurfacing treatment to help with an array of skin concerns. A small device that houses hair-thin needles is gently passed over the skin, creating micro-channels. These channels trigger your body’s healing response by tricking it into thinking it’s injured. Your body will produce more collagen to regenerate healthy cells that will fill in those channels.

When new, structurally stronger cells are created by this increase in collagen production, skin looks smoother, younger and revitalized. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and requires minimal to no preparation or downtime. A series of 3-6 sessions is recommended to effectively address concerns like:

  • Acne scarring
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged and clogged pores
  • Uneven skin texture and tone
  • Hypertrophic and keloid scarring
  • Aging

Microneedling is a transformative treatment on its own and can provide amazing and long-lasting results. It’s also a perfect treatment to use in tandem with PRP.

PRP

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma and is an effective and natural treatment to address a variety of skincare issues. PRP gained popularity as the “vampire facial”, but it’s far more than a facial. PRP uses the plasma from your blood to increase your body’s production of collagen.

A sample of your blood is taken and put into a centrifuge. The growth factors in your plasma are separated from your red blood cells so they can be used to stimulate tissue regeneration in your skin. PRP works well with microneedling because the micro-channels created from the microneedles act as a direct line for the PRP to reach deeper layers of your skin and start regeneration closer to the foundation of your skin.

PRP, either alone or with another treatment, can address a multitude of skincare issues and help in hair loss and hair restoration. When used for collagen production, areas of the face and body can regain some of their lost structure and volume as stronger layers of skin are built. Talk to your provider about PRP to help with:

  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Fine, moderate and deep lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Hair loss
  • Lost cheek and midface volume
  • Hollow and wrinkled backs of hands
  • Chest and decolletage lines
  • Neck and jawline lost definition

Other Solutions

Your skincare expert can help you decide the right treatment plan for your concerns, ideal results and budget. They may recommend other anti-aging treatments that address your specific combination of concerns. Other treatments they may suggest are:

  • BOTOX and other neuromodulators
  • Dermal fillers
  • Broadband light therapy
  • Hybrid fractional laser therapy
  • CoolSculpting
  • Lip enhancement
  • PRF—platelet-rich fibrin

What Are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

If you struggle with excess facial hair, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, or acne scars, dermaplaning could be an ideal solution for you. This painless treatment instantly rejuvenates the skin, removing facial hair, minimizing wrinkles, diminishing dark spots, and leaving the face brighter. It’s one of the many cosmetic treatments offered by Beauty 2.0 Aesthetics in Port Moody, British Columbia.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning involves shaving the face with a medical-grade scalpel. After cleansing your face and applying a solution that opens up the pores, one of our medical aestheticians will gently scrape the surface of your skin with a surgical steel blade held at a 45-degree angle. While working on various parts of the face, the aesthetician will hold the skin taut. You may hear a whispering sound as the blade is used to make quick strokes across your face.

This treatment sloughs off dead skin cells as well as the fine vellus hairs that are otherwise known as peach fuzz. Dermaplaning also stimulates the creation of new skin cells: a process that rejuvenates facial skin and offers a more youthful look. After the treatment, our aesthetician will apply a post enzymatic mask to improve skin tone and texture.

What Are the Benefits?

There are a number of benefits associated with this treatment. The treatment almost instantly improves the look and feel of the skin. The quick and noninvasive nature of this treatment also makes it a popular option for patients who can’t afford a lot of downtime. Here are some of the benefits you’ll experience if you opt for a dermaplane treatment at our office:

Instant Hair Removal

Dermaplaning quickly and easily removes facial hair. Getting rid of those fuzzy hairs will make your skin look smoother and younger. You’ll be surprised at just how much better you look when that hair is removed. Many patients find that their face practically glows after a treatment.

Your Skin Will Look and Feel Dewy and Fresh

Dermaplaning removes the top layer of dead skin cells and stimulates new skin cell growth. The effects of this treatment can vary with each patient, but for many individuals, it leaves the skin looking fresher, brighter, and more radiant.

The treatment can also even out skin tone and ease hyperpigmentation, or the darker spots that can sometimes occur on skin when there is an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces natural skin color. Your skin will also feel softer and smoother after a treatment. Many patients say this treatment leaves their skin feeling as soft as a baby’s bottom.

Fine Lines, Wrinkles, and Pores Will Be Minimized

The new skin cells the treatment generates will give the face a younger look and minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This treatment will also reduce the size of your pores by removing excess dirt and oils.

Moisturizers and Serums Will Be More Effective

The days after a treatment are an ideal time to focus on your best moisturizers, serums, and other elements of your at-home skincare routine. Your clear pores and hairless skin will leave the face especially receptive to treatments, and your skincare products will be especially effective.

Because dermaplaning improves the efficacy of other skincare treatments, many patients opt to combine this treatment with additional same-day treatments at our clinic, including chemical peels. Dermaplaning can promote a deeper penetration of the peel, leading to rapid results in fewer treatments.

It Will Minimize Acne Breakouts

Although we don’t recommend this treatment for individuals with active breakouts, if you’ve struggled with acne in the past, dermaplaning may be able to help you. When dead skin cells build up, they can clog your pores and hair follicles. By getting rid of them, your skin and pores will be clean, clear, and less likely to break out again.

And if you are using acne products, they’ll be more effective after this treatment, much like your moisturizers and serums will be more effective. This treatment may also be able to even out your skin tone and ease some of the redness associated with scarring you may have from previous acne outbreaks.

Cosmetics Will Go On Like a Dream

Your cosmetics will also be much easier to apply after treatment. You’ve probably noticed that facial hair tends to stand out, even more, when you are wearing foundation and facial powder. After this treatment, your foundation will go on smoothly, and you won’t have to worry about the look of those fine facial hairs. You’ll shave minutes off of your morning cosmetics routine and feel better about your appearance.

The Treatment Is Relaxing

One of the great things about this treatment is that the treatment itself is painless, noninvasive, and very relaxing. You will feel a light sensation as the scalpel is guided across your face, but it’s not an uncomfortable experience. Some patients compare it to the sensation of shaving your legs in the shower with a manual razor. This is an easy treatment that many patients enjoy.

Fast Treatment

This is an ideal option for busy patients whose schedules don’t allow a lot of downtime. The treatment can be performed in less than an hour, and you’ll be able to get back to your schedule immediately. Some patients even schedule treatments for their lunch hour and then head right back to work, which is why this treatment is fondly referred to by some fans as a lunchtime facial.

It’s Completely Noninvasive

Because this treatment is noninvasive, your skin won’t be harmed or stressed in any way during the treatment. You also won’t need to worry about using numbing creams, ice, or other special pre- or post-treatment steps.

Safe for All Skin Types

This treatment is safe and effective for all skin types and all skin tones. This treatment can even be performed on those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

A Better Option

Vellus hairs cover the body and work to keep us warm and protect our skin. But on some individuals, the vellus hairs are thicker and more visible, prompting patients to seek ways of removing it. Other hair-removal treatments — like waxing, threading, and lasers — can make it difficult to get ride of vellus hairs on some patients. Laser treatments, for example, won’t work on blonde or gray hairs. Dermaplaning is both safe and effective on most patients.

Common Questions About the Process

Interested in learning more? We’re not surprised, because there’s a lot to like about this treatment. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we get about this treatment:

How Does It Compare to Shaving?

Both remove hair while also exfoliating the skin. The surgical scalpels used in this treatment, however, are significantly sharper than the manual razors used for a routine shave. The dermaplaning process also offers a more aggressive exfoliation that removes more of that top layer of dead skin cells. It relies on a small scalpel that allows the aesthetician to navigate small areas and tricky angles on the face.

Will It Cause My Hair to Grow Back Thicker or Darker?

No. There is a common misconception that shaving will cause hair to grow back thicker and darker, but this treatment won’t have this effect. The treatment does not interact with the hair follicles or have any impact on the rate at which the hair on your face grows. After the treatment, your hair will continue growing at the same rate it always has. Genetics are the main determining factor in how fast hair grows.

What Does It Really Feel Like?

Some patients say it feels much like it does when you scratch or rub your face with one of your fingers. Others compare it to the sensation you get when shaving your legs with a manual razor. You may also hear a slight scratching sound as the scalpel gently scrapes over the surface of your face.

Who Can Benefit?

Just about any patient who wants to get rid of peach fuzz and other fine facial hairs, and who wants exfoliation, can benefit from this treatment. Because it is gentle and noninvasive, the treatment is also ideal for patients who have limitations that prevent them from seeking other treatments, including pregnant women, individuals with extra-sensitive skin, and those who need to avoid the chemicals found in some other products and services.

Is It Different From Dermabrasion?

Although their names are similar, and both treatments offer exfoliation, they are quite different. Dermabrasion, which is rarely performed now, uses micro-crystals and suctioning to exfoliate the skin.

What Should I Do After a Treatment?

Sunscreen and sun avoidance are an important part of any skincare routine, and they’ll be especially important in the days following treatment. We also recommend that you refrain from using retinol and exfoliants for 24 hours after treatment. Otherwise, the post-treatment days are a great time to indulge in your favorite high-potency moisturizing masks, creams, and serums.

Can I Wear Makeup After a Treatment?

The treatment really opens up your skin and your pores. Some patients like to go makeup-free for a few hours or even a full day to enjoy that fresh-faced experience and to keep their pores clean and clear. However, if you need or want to apply cosmetics right away, you certainly can.

Can I Do This Myself?

Working with a surgical scalpel is a lot different from using the manual razors you’ve probably become accustomed to. Scalpels are super sharp, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you run the risk of leaving yourself with nicks, ingrown hairs, stubble, or other injuries. It’s best to seek out a doctor or a trained aesthetician for this treatment, which some patients refer to as a scalpel facial.

How Frequently Should I Schedule Appointments?

After your first treatment, you’ll likely be excited about your results and eager to keep going. However, we recommend going at least 4 weeks between treatments to give your skin the proper amount of time to rejuvenate after those dead skin cells have been sloughed off.

Besides, it will take a few weeks for your facial hair to begin growing back in, so you won’t need a return treatment right away. Some patients who have facial hair that naturally grows slowly may be able to go even longer between treatments.
